Stylos

7km inland from the coastal village of Kalives and 20 km from Chania is the picturesque, traditional village of Stilos. This is not a busy village and the very reasonably priced tavernas serving Cretan dishes tend to attract the locals rather than tourists. The village is famous for its giant plane trees and its spring water. The well known Samaria brand is bottled here. For walkers, the 10 km long Diktamos Gorge begins in Stilos, a walk of about 4 hours - and you have to be reasonably fit. During World War II Stilos was the site of a battle between the allies and the German invading forces and the villagers sheltered allied troops at great risk to themselves. Nearby the village is Panagia Serviotissa, the best preserved 12th century Byzantine church in Crete and within the village is the Byzantine church of St John the Theologian. What is believed to be the famous Minoan site of Aptera lies lies to the norther between Stilos and Megala Chorafia but no systematic excavations have as yet been undertaken.
