Kassiopi

Kassiopi - GIC The Villa Collection

The largest harbour of the North coast of Corfu, Kassiopi could be described as the Gateway to the stunningly beautiful North East Coast of the island. The dazzlingly blue Ionian sea caresses the several hidden shingle beaches and coves around the headland and nearby coast and the dramatic skyline reaches across brilliant blue seas towards Italy in the North, and the remote Albanian coast just one mile away at the closest point. The dramatic mountains and traditional inland villages of the Corfus interior are a short drive away. The North Coast stretches in a long curving swaithe of sandy beaches, seaside resorts and nature reserves to the rugged sandstone sea-carved cliffs at Cape Drastis, and the start of the spectacular West Coast whilst along the sheltered North East a myriad of tiny shingle beaches and seaside villages await exploration by sea or car.

Said to have been founded in the 3rd century by King Pyrrhus of Epirus, this once heavily defended strategic port is overlooked by the ancient ruins of one of Corfu’s 5 important Byzantine fortresses. Through the course of time the fortress has fallen to ruin but the power and mystery of its abandoned walls is still evident today and it continues to dominate the charming circular harbour of the town.

Over the years the town has metamorphosed from a strategic ancient port and site of the temple of Kassios Zeus, now the central Church, to a small modest fishing harbour before becoming the bustling seaside resort it is today. Kassiopi is the perfect base for families or couples alike. It is a nicely sized town with a great choice of shops and tavernas, plenty of local activities to choose from, some lovely walks and beaches and of course direct access to the sea with boat hire and trips readily available.

Here you will find a unique cohesion between the old and the new with smart modern bars and cafes sharing the frontage with traditional ‘cafeneons’, their seasoned farmers and fishermen discussing politics and fishing over ouzo and greek coffee. With its ancient charm, flawless views and crystal waters, it comes as little surprise that Kassiopi and the North East coast has become home to some of the most discerning clientele in Greece.
