SAMI

With a population of just over 2,000, Sami is the most significant harbour on the island, with ferry links to Patras on the Geek mainland, Ithaca and Italy and is the second largest town on Kefalonia after Argostoli the capital.

The town is set at the southern end of Sami Bay, with the seaside village resort of Agia Efimia 9 kilometres to the north. Sami has an attractive waterfront of tavernas and there are many shops, supermarkets and cafe bars to choose from. It is the main town on the eastern coast and looks out towards the south west coast of Ithaca.

Modern Sami is just about in the same location as Ancient Sami which, in Homeric times, was the capital of the island. At that time Kefalonia was part of the maritime kingdom of Ithaka.

There are beaches to be found along the coastline from the main town, the most notable being the very beautiful Antisamos Beach. In the mountains above are many quiet traditional hamlets with wonderful views over the bay towards Ithaca.
