Therisso - GIC The Villa Collection

One of the most famous villages in Crete and the stage for the Therisso revolt in March 1905 where the legendary Cretan politician and future Greek prime minister Eleftherios Venizelos led an insurrection against the Cretan Government which was then an autonomous state under Ottoman suzerainty. The revolt was caused by the desire for union with Greece. This village, at 580 metres above sea level, surrounded by narrow gorges and with access to other neighbouring villages, is only 14km from Chanea and held a strategic position in the foothills of The White Mountains with many grottoes and caverns providing shelter for the insurgents.

Today, this village, hidden in the foothills of The White Mountains and an excellent base for walks amongst the gorges, offers a choice of 9 tavernas and a small mini market. The views from this area are some of the most spectacular in Crete. Beaches on the North Coast are a drive of about 25 minutes.
